CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Where is Detective Williams?
Itâs the question of the day. Itâs the question Chief Houston asks when he catches me at the front of the apartment before I leave. âIf not here, where?â he asks.
âI donât know.â
âYouâre the profiler. If sheâs dead, where is she now?â
âIf she was deadââ I stop myself short, because unlike a lot of irritating people on this case, I donât have foot to mouth disease. âWe donât know if sheâs dead.â
He studies me hard and heavily. âTell me where your head is right now. What the hell can I possibly do to help you catch this asshole if I donât know what rabbit hole weâve fallen inside?â
âI like to travel my rabbit holes alone rather than with a wolf that might eat me.â
âYouâre no rabbit, Lilah,â he snaps, folding his arms in front of his chest. Heâs big like Thomas, but he stays the hell in his own personal space. I still donât trust him. âYou still donât trust me,â he comments, like he heard what I thought. Hell, maybe I said it out loud.
âNope,â I say, sticking to the less is more idea.
âOkay then. At least youâre honest. Iâm assigning Detective Carpenter to take over as lead for Williams, reporting to you, of course. You know him. You worked with him. He knows Williams.â
Heâs right. I know him. Iâve worked with him. Heâs an old geezer with a bald head. âKnowing him doesnât mean I trust him. It doesnât even mean I like him.â
âHe knows Williams.â
âYou said that.â
âYou donât. He can offer insight into where she might be right now.â
âFine. Have him call me.â I turn to walk away.
âAgent Love.â
I grimace and pause, turning on my heels. âYes?â I ask.
âWho can I give you that you will trust? Who do you want on this case?â
âGreg,â I say of my old partner. âHeâs on leave because Moser set him up to take the fall for something he didnât do. Payback because Greg knew he was dirty and wasnât going to put up with it.â
âIf I get him back?â
âGet him back. Weâll talk a bit more if you get that done.â
âYouâre riding me like Iâm a drunk fool, Lilah.â
âAgent Love to you, asshole, until you prove youâre not a drunk fool.â
âCall fucking Murphy and the âfuckâ in that sentence is me trying to relate to you because nothing else is working.â
Umbrella Man has a better chance of relating to me, but thatâs my little secret. âDid you want a cookie or a proper lesson on pronunciation? Because you need to emphasize the F or the K in appropriate moments.â
He doesnât laugh. âIâll get your man back.â He presses his hands to his hips. âWe have an issue though. The press got hold of all of this. Theyâre breathing down my neck. What am I giving them?â
âYou have a suicide in a courtroom. Leave it at that.â
âI have two dead women. They know.â
âThat, to the public eye, donât connect.â
âThe attorney general wants this case solved before panic sets in,â he counters.
